Target PPI is an input assumption that connects desired physical size to required pixel count. The most defensible starting point is the printer or lab specification for the exact product. If none exists, the decision still depends on how the print will be produced and viewed, not on a universal number embedded in a calculator.

Start with production requirements

Ask for preferred pixel dimensions or PPI at final trim size, required bleed, acceptable file formats, colour profile, sharpening guidance, and whether the service resamples automatically. These facts define the delivery contract. DpiCalc can translate the numeric relationship but cannot discover a provider’s hidden workflow.

Account for intended viewing

A hand-held photo, wall print, exhibition panel, sign, and banner are viewed at different distances and under different conditions. Fine source detail matters differently in each case. The target should be agreed for that use rather than inferred solely from a familiar preset label such as draft, standard, or high quality.

Inspect source quality separately

Enough pixels do not repair missed focus, camera shake, aggressive compression, noise, artefacts, or unsuitable sharpening. Conversely, a lower calculated PPI does not by itself prove a print will fail at its intended distance. Review the source at appropriate scale and, for important work, make a proof using the actual production process.

Record the assumption with the result

When you calculate required pixels, keep the chosen PPI, final physical size, unit, rounding rule, crop decision, and provider requirement together.
